About Dr. Biji Bahuleyan
Dr Biji Bahuleyan is a senior neurosurgeon and spine surgeon with more than 21 years of clinical and research experience. After his MBBS from T.D Medical College, Alleppey in 1995,Dr Biji completed the 5-year neurosurgery training from the prestigious Christian Medical College, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India in 2005. Dr. Biji later worked as a consultant neurosurgeon in Christian Medical College, Vellore for 2 years. He later joined the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Trivandrum, India in 2007 where he served initially as a cerebrovascular and skull base fellow and then as a consultant neurosurgeon. The epilepsy treatment program at SCTIMST is considered one among the most reputed in Asia where Dr Biji worked as an epilepsy surgeon.
A number of fellowships in different subspecialties of neurosurgery were completed by Dr Biji from well-known American universities. The fellowships include Spine surgery (Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA); Minimally invasive neurosurgery (Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, USA); Neurosurgical oncology, Functional neurosurgery and pain management (Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, USA).
Several of Dr Biji’s articles have been published in reputed peer-reviewed journals, some of which were accepted for publication as cover illustrations. Dr Biji has also authored many textbook chapters, the most notable one is in the reputed textbook of spine surgery “Benzel’s Spine surgery”. During the minimally invasive fellowship in the US, Dr Biji designed 4 new minimally invasive (keyhole) surgical approaches for the first time in English literature for the treatment of patients with intractable epilepsy which were published in journals and won many awards.
Michael Gaab, the pioneer in neuro endoscopy from Hannover, Germany has written a 3-page commentary article in the journal “World Neurosurgery” on the endoscopic work published by Dr. Biji Bahuleyan.
Apart from treating all common neurosurgical disorders (like brain and spine injury, brain and spine tumours, hydrocephalus etc), some of the unique areas where Dr Biji is trained are epilepsy surgery, deep brain stimulation, placement of spinal cord stimulators and intrathecal pain pumps for patients with chronic pain from spinal disorders and cancer pain and intrathecal baclofen pumps for the treatment of spasticity.
After returning from the US in 2015, Dr Biji served as a Consultant Neurosurgeon at KIMS hospital Trivandrum where he was the academic coordinator for the DNB neurosurgery program. He is an invited faculty for epilepsy surgery training in many reputed institutions and educational forums. Epilepsy surgeon Dr Biji visits some of the top epilepsy centers in India. Sahrudaya Hospital’s Dr Biji is a visiting neurosurgeon, Alappuzha, Kerala and SN Hospital, Cherthala. Dr Biji is currently a senior neurosurgeon and spine surgeon at Lisie Hospital, Kochi, Kerala, India.
